About this resource

The Law-Enforcement Interaction Card is a wallet-sized document designed specifically for encounters with police officers, security personnel, and other law enforcement. It communicates autism-related behaviours that may be misread — such as avoiding eye contact, delayed responses, or appearing agitated — and provides clear, step-by-step guidance for the officer.

Who this is for

Autistic people who may interact with law enforcement and want to reduce the risk of misunderstanding, escalation, or harm during those encounters.

What it contains

  • Front: High-visibility "I AM AUTISTIC" identifier, cardholder name, and a brief communication note
  • Back: Officer guidance — plain-language steps for communicating effectively, what behaviours to expect, and what to avoid
  • Amber colour coding on the front for immediate visual recognition
  • Wallet-sized format (3.5" × 2")

How to use it

  1. Print on card stock and cut to size
  2. Carry in your wallet or a visible pocket
  3. Present the card at the start of an encounter if possible — before verbal communication becomes difficult
  4. You can also ask a companion to hand it to the officer on your behalf
